Restrictions Imposed on Bonus Benefits for American Express® Gold Card

Yesterday, American Express made some changes to the bonus offer on the American Express® Gold Card. While the public and affiliate offer for the card remained at 60,000 points, the spending requirement increased from $4,000 to $6,000 in 3 months.

However, the bigger change was the addition of a “family restriction” rule on the American Express® Gold Card. This rule, first uncovered by AwardWallet, states that if you currently have or have had any version of the Platinum Card, you are not eligible for the Gold Card’s welcome bonus. This restriction does not apply to those who have the Green Card.

This change suggests that American Express is moving towards offering fewer welcome bonuses to existing cardmembers. It is possible that similar restrictions could be implemented on the American Express® Business Gold Card and the Business Platinum Card® from American Express in the future.

If you currently have a Gold Card, you can still apply for the Platinum Card and receive its welcome bonus. However, keep in mind that there is now a limit of one bonus on the Platinum Card, regardless of the issuer.

It is important to consider these changes and act accordingly if you are interested in obtaining these cards and their welcome bonuses. Additionally, it is recommended to stay updated on any further developments or changes to credit card offers.
