Street Art of Djerbahood in Tunisia
Located in the central part of Djerba island, Ar-Rijad, also known as Djerbahood, is a hidden gem that is worth a visit during your holiday in Tunisia. Djerbahood is a street art oasis, boasting hundreds of murals that will leave you in awe. Even if you are not a big fan of street art, the creativity and beauty found in this town are undeniable.
Djerbahood was transformed into one of the largest street art galleries in the world in 2014, thanks to the vision of Parisian artist Mehdi Ben Cheikh. Over a hundred artists from thirty countries, including renowned names like Inti, ROA, and Phlegm, were invited to create their masterpieces on the walls of Djerbahood. In just three months, they produced over 250 stunning works of art.
To visit Djerbahood, the best way to reach the town is by taxi, as public transport in Djerba is not the most efficient. The taxi ride from the airport to Djerbahood costs around 15 Tunisian dinars (TND). Once you have explored the town, you can easily find a taxi on the main street to take you back to your hotel for around 10 TND.
To make the most of your visit, it is recommended to arrive at Djerbahood in the morning before the crowds of tourists arrive. This will allow you to enjoy the place without too many people around and capture better photographs of the murals. During my visit in early January, the neighborhood was not overcrowded, creating a more pleasant experience.
While exploring Djerbahood, it is best to wander around and venture into the back streets. There is one main square where you will be dropped off by taxi, which can serve as a starting point for your sightseeing. Take your time to explore each street and admire the murals at your own pace. It should take approximately two hours to see all the murals in Djerbahood, but you may spend more time if you take many photographs of the beautiful artwork.
In addition to the street art, Djerbahood offers other attractions to enjoy. Admire the picturesque doors that Tunisia is known for, as well as the traditional houses scattered throughout the town. Near Djerbahood, you can visit the El Ghriba Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in Tunisia and possibly in all of Africa. This stunning place, renovated in the 19th century, is a must-see.
After a day of sightseeing, take a moment to relax and soak in the creative vibe of Djerbahood. Sit down for a coffee or lemonade on the main square and appreciate the unique atmosphere of this artistic community. If you’re interested in taking home a piece of Djerbahood, there are small shops where you can find souvenirs.
Djerbahood is a testament to the transformative power of art. This once overlooked town has become a colorful and creative hub that attracts visitors from all over the world. Plan your trip to Djerbahood and immerse yourself in the vibrant street art that has captured the hearts of many.
