Experience the Thrill and Intrigue at Wat Phu Tok, Thailands Most Adventurous Temple

“The sixth level is the most spectacular… and the most scary,” some people mentioned as we passed by. As I began to climb the wooden stairs and ladders up the red rock mountain of Phu Thok, Thailand, I could see what they meant. The temple, considered Thailand’s most adventurous (potentially dangerous?), was situated in the lesser-visited province of Bueng Kan. Falling far in the northeastern Isan region of Thailand, this destination is perfect for those who enjoy tranquility, nature, and off-the-beaten-path attractions.

Now known as Wat Phu Tok, the temple was founded by Monk Luang Pu Juan who created wooden staircases, ladders, and walkways throughout the mountain, connecting various shrines and meditation spots. The temple is indeed remarkable, providing breathtaking views of the Mekong River basin and the green trees of Bueng Kan from its sixth level. However, the journey towards it is not for the faint-hearted. The stairs begin easy but gradually get steeper, almost turning into a ladder at some points. Also, one needs to be careful of potentially dangerous local wildlife, including snakes.

The temple complex offers plenty of parking and can be reached by a 30-minute drive from Bueng Kan city. It’s advisable to wear pants, sleeved shirts, and shoes for the hike, and to take precautions as there’s little in the way of safety guidelines. It’s well worth the journey, resulting in an unforgettable visit to one of Thailand’s most adventurous temples. Be sure to spare at least two hours to fully enjoy the experience.
