Disney Cruise Line’s much-anticipated unveiling of its latest ship, the “Disney Treasure,” has been postponed due to Hurricane Idalia’s impending arrival on Florida’s Gulf Coast. The cruise line had originally scheduled a virtual reveal of the new ship on August 30, 2023, but the impending hurricane has forced them to delay the announcement until September 5.
The “Disney Treasure” reveal will take the form of a video titled “Unlocking the Disney Treasure: Adventure Awaits Onboard Disney’s Newest Ship,” which will provide a sneak peek at what the ship has to offer when it debuts in 2024.
Disney Cruise Line posted on social media about the postponement due to Hurricane Idalia, rescheduling the virtual event for September 5 at 11 a.m. ET.
The reveal video is expected to showcase three international locations – the Middle East, Mexico, and South America – possibly indicating the ship’s future routes. However, no official itineraries have been announced yet. The video will also provide a glimpse into the ship’s dining and entertainment options, as well as other onboard spaces.
In addition to delaying the “Disney Treasure” reveal, Hurricane Idalia has caused changes in cruise itineraries in the Western Caribbean. Many ships, including the “Disney Fantasy,” have altered their routes, while others, like the Carnival Cruise Line’s “Carnival Conquest,” have had to revise their itineraries.
The “Disney Treasure,” capable of accommodating 4,000 guests, is currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The ship, which will be the sixth in Disney’s fleet, is a sister ship to the “Disney Wish” and will be the third to be powered by liquified natural gas (LNG).
Details about the new ship suggest that the Disney character Aladdin will feature prominently in the ship’s Grand Hall, which will have themes from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The venue will showcase the well-known characters Aladdin and Jasmine, along with their magical flying carpet.
The “Disney Treasure” is set to launch in 2024, coinciding with the opening of Disney’s second private island in the Bahamas, Lighthouse Point. This follows the cruise line’s first private island, Castaway Cay. Disney Cruise Line is expected to invest up to $400 million in the development of the 700-acre Lighthouse Point property.
